Top Quality Tour Putting - Improve Your Golf Putting
By Stan Thomas
Running a golf web site a lot of books and manuals come across my desk from different merchants wanting me help promote them. I get some good stuff come my way, but it's rare that something really catches my eye. Recently I found the manual "Top Quality Tour Putting" on my desk. I briefly glanced at it and moved on to the next without giving it much thought. Then last weekend I was playing some basketball with my son, shot a jumper, came down wrong on my left foot and sprained it and was forced to sit in my recliner for a couple of days.
Being 'recliner-ridden' for a bit and looking for something to do rather than watch any more TV, I had my wife print out a few e-books that were on my computer. One of them was "Top Quality Tour Putting" by John Redd and Lester Bouchard (more about these guys later).
The introduction immediately caught my eye. Putting, they say, "is a science that can be learned". And then, "You have to train your mind to perform in a way that matches your mechanics."
And more:
What It "Top Quality Tour Putting"?
It is more than having an excellent stroke, It is more than being able to read the greens, It is more than having a feel for the pace. It is being able to do all three automatically while creating the ideal image in your mind.
Now, I'm a true believer in the 'inner game', not only of golf but life. I firmly believe everything begins on the inside first and that the outside is a manifestation of that.
This manual begins with some golf drills (you're going to need a couple 2 x 4's, a couple of feet long, and some a construction chalk line - don't freak. It's all you're going to need). A lot of the focus of these drills is on role muscle memory plays in the putting stroke, and how to develop the always elusive 'feel' when putting.
Now, here is where I went "Wow!" and this manual went to a different level for me. The mysterious 'feel' of putting is actually broken down into steps, and you're taught how to develop it through a series of specific and tangible drills. In other words, they show you a path to follow to get to the 'feel'. No more groping in the dark to try and find it, and no need to pray the power above bestow it upon you. Here, taught in concise steps, is a direct path to it.
But it gets better.
Do you get lost trying to read a green? Redd and Bouchard break this down as well. And, it is just as scientific. Everything is step by step, the mystery taken away. I don't think there is anyway someone could read this manual, practice these drills, and not come away with a better understanding of how to read a green.
Okay, now we get to my favorite section of the book: Mental And Emotional Training.
Here Redd and Bouchard teach (yeah, "teach" is the right word) the mastering of your emotions and the mental aspects of golf through the process of awareness. This awareness catapults your game into a new dimension without the effort of the conscious mind.
You're going to learn how to keep the conscious mind at bay and working orderly while activating the subconscious. And, as always, it's taught step by step. There are a series of visualization exercises and drills and list of affirmations that you'll access.
This review is longer than I intended, but Redd and Bouchard have really put together a top-notch product. Well worth the $14.95. And don't worry. Each section, drill, routine is complete with a set of clear photos and graphics to illustrate what they're talking about. They didn't leave anything to chance.
This is the most complete and thorough program I've seen on mastering the art of putting. It comes with my complete and full recommendation.
